Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 07046 Tilt 'n Drain Big Griddle Cool-Touch Electric Griddle

Customer Review: Just misses excellent
Summary: 4 Stars

Our family cooks tremendous quantities of bacon because one of our children has an eating disorder and the only protein source he will eat is "extra extra crispy bacon." We needed to replace our griddle (whose brand/model I do not recall) because its "no-stick" properties had vanished after several years of heavy usage.

The first replacement was too narrow, bacon strips could only be placed lengthwise so only a small quantity could be cooked at a time. After giving the first replacement away, armed with a ruler I purchased a new griddle. I was lured by a larger cooking surface and the promise that it would be "dishwasher safe." That griddle's non-stick surface was non-functional and it had to be scrubbed vigourously before it could be put in the dishwasher. Even more problematic was that its heating element was so uneven that part of a bacon strip would be burning while other parts were barely done at all. We returned that grill.

We then purchased the Presto Tilt'n Drain Big Griddle. It has proven very satisfactory for our purposes.

Pros:
1. It is big and will cook a lot of bacon at a time.
2. It cooks evenly enough that the bacon is uniformly done (with the help of a bacon press)
3. The "Tilt" feature improves the draining of the fat when cooking bacon but allows you to "flatten" the surface when cooking pancakes.
4. Non-stick surface is non-stick

Cons:
1. It is big and takes up a lot of counter/storage space (presumably you have factored this in if you are looking for a big griddle)
2. It has a very short power cord.
3. The grease trap is much too small (approximately the same size as on smaller griddles) so you need to put a pie plate underneath to catch the overflow. We had the same problem with other griddles and it is not an issue if you are not cooking multiple batches of bacon.
4. The evenness of the heating is only marginally acceptable. When cooking large pancakes you can see significant differences in "doneness" between areas of the pancake. Only an issue if you insist on an "even golden brown" for your pancakes. Our children have yet to reject a pancake for cosmetic reasons.

Summary: If you need to cook large quantities of food, this does the job and doesn't seem to have any competition. If you don't need the size, you are better off with a smaller grill with a more even heating surface.

Customer Review: Big!
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this to heat my waxes for encaustic painting and it does the job. Bigger is better for this application. I gave it four stars only because one aspect of the design is not ideal for my use: there is no lip on the side that "drains." This criticism might not apply for cooking. I don't have a way to confirm that it heats evenly. Overall, this is large and well made; I'd get it again.

Customer Review: BIG Griddle
Summary: 5 Stars

I was searching for the biggest griddle I could find and this is. It like that it is more square, unlike most which are more rectangular. It holds alot of food and cleans easily. No complaints.

Customer Review: For That REALLY BIG Meal...
Summary: 5 Stars

No kidding, we're talking Really, REALLY BIG! As in, fry nine eggs big. Or a half pound of bacon big. Or eight grilled cheese sandwiches big. All at the same time, and the food is evenly cooked, golden brown and delicious. In fact, the first use I put the Big Griddle to was pancackes... it absolutely makes the best pancakes you'll ever eat! AND... it makes them six-to-eight at once. Get ya a nice big STACK goin', and eat 'em while they're hot... not one at a time in a pan, trying to keep the first few warm while you cook the last one.
The only possible downside is, ironically, the same thing that makes this appliance so great; it's size. You had better really want/ need a large griddle, and have a nice deep cabinet to store it in. Fortunately, I have that cabinet, and the ease of use, the quality of construction and that big cooking surface all combine to make this a really great kitchen tool!

Customer Review: Great for big breakfasts
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this griddle to have a large enough surface to cook pancakes. I was tired of having two pans going at once. The griddle heats evenly over the whole cooking area and is true to its "cool-touch" claim. I was happy enough with the product to buy one as a gift for someone else. The only downside to the griddle is finding a place to store it.
