When I first found this product, and searched for reviews online, there seemed to be some confusion as to whether this "multi-cooker" was actually a deep fryer at all. As best I can tell, this had to do with whether the cord was UL approved for a deep fryer, and the manufacturer seemed reluctant to advertise the product as such, at least for a time. Presently, both the online instruction manual, which can be downloaded as a PDF file, and the hard copy instructions that came with my unit make it abundantly clear that this unit can be used as a deep fryer. My experience confirmed this- not only is this unit a deep fryer, it is the best one I have ever owned.
I am a fry fanatic, and I use my deep fryer, which is located on my (covered) deck, at least once a week. Years ago I purchased a fancy European model, with a closing lid, charcoal filters, and a drain spout for removing used oil. All of these features were great at first, but with use, they became clogged with oil residue and were impossible to clean. I then went with a simpler unit with an exposed, removable heating element and digital controls. Once again, engineering overkill; it was hard to clean and died before it's time. The Presto unit is simplicity itself- the manual control unit can be removed from the cooker, which is lined with a non-stick surface both inside and out, and is easy to clean either by hand or in a dishwasher. Yes, the fry basket is a bit flimsy, but I never even use mine- it's just another part to clean- and a brass Asian fry scoop works better anyway. And no, you can't use the glass cover when the unit is in use as a fryer, so you'll want to vent the fumes in some way. But with those caveats aside, this unit works great. It is so good that I am thinking of buying another unit just to have as a backup for the future. For the price, the Presto can't be beat!
