I bought this item about 13 years ago. Let me tell you, although it is big and uses a lot of oil (i didn't like it too much for that reason so.... ) wanting to get rid of it, after using it on Christmas eve, i put it out on the porch oil and all for 6 months ! I didn't think it would survive, but it did, than i left it out for 2 YEARS! this is in direct west facing sun. I was hoping it will croak, so that I could through it out, but NO !!!!
So, it works INDESTRUCTIBLY! It is easy to take care of and clean up and when you follow the cooking instructions, you too will be singing it's praises. Thus, heat it up to 375 (High) with the lid closed and the proper amount of oil put in. Use same sized food and don't over fill the basket (2/3 full). Wait till it looks golden brown, than de-pot into a strainer on a plate. Bonus: since it controls the temperature and is designed so well, your food WILL NOT BE GREECY !
Clean up is by hand (in my case). To save the oil i check that it is no more than rich dark amber without too much offensive smell. After oil cools i set up a strainer wrapped well in cheese cloth over a big bowl and filter it. I than funnel it into (usually) it's original container bottle.
This thing really is worth the money if you like fried NOT GREECY food. Find an easily accessible storage space for it so that it becomes a frequent part of your kitchen repetiuear (( good grief, how DO you spell that word ???? ))

Cool touch exterior. Removable non-stick pot for easy cleaning. Extra large viewing window. Basket handle doubles as an exterior control to lower food into the oil with cover closed. Charcoal filter to reduce frying odors. Seal tight cover prevents spattering.Fried food is comfort food--think French fries, doughnuts, or shrimp tempura--and almost everyone craves it at some time or another. But it can be kind of messy to make at home. The Presto CoolDaddy electric deep fryer is an easy-to-use, self-contained frying unit, so there's practically no mess. The hinged lid with its large viewing window eliminates spattering altogether, while a mesh charcoal filter keeps odors to a minimum. The CoolDaddy fits easily on most kitchen countertops, and its look is compatible with a variety of kitchen styles. It's made of off-white, stay-cool plastic with modern contours and gray-and-red accents.
The removable nonstick oil pot holds up to eight cups of oil or four pounds of shortening, and can accommodate up to six servings of food at a time. A sliding thermostat button allows the oil to be heated up to the optimum frying temperature of 375 degrees F. An indicator light to the left of the handle goes off when the oil has reached the desired temperature. The frying basket's handle extends and locks to lift food in and out; fold it down neatly for storage or to lower the food into the oil. (That can be done with the lid closed, so there's no spattering at all!) The power cord has a magnetic safety connection, so that if the unit is jostled during cooking, the cord will disconnect, shutting power off immediately.
After frying, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before attempting to empty oil. Wash the removable pot and frying basket in warm water with mild detergent and a nonabrasive sponge or cloth. The cool-touch plastic base is not immersible; wipe with a damp cloth to clean. The lid gasket is removable and should be cleaned periodically. The mesh charcoal filter should be replaced after approximately 10 to 15 uses. The Presto 05445 CoolDaddy measures 12 by 11 by 10-1/2 inches (handle extends an additional 4 inches). Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty.
